About Us

“Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.” – Ryunosuke Satoro

United Planet Tanzania is a Tanzanian-based non-profit organization that provides unique and immersive volunteer opportunities with the objective of bridging the cultural gap between Tanzania and other nations. Over the past five years, we have placed more than 200 volunteers at different work projects in Tanzania, positively impacting communities throughout the country.

United Planet Tanzania prides itself to be a member of the ICYE Federation. This partnership allows us not only to receive international volunteers into the country, but also to send Tanzanian volunteers to one of the ICYE member nations.

1. Our mission

United Planet Tanzania is a volunteer-powered non-profit organization that strives to foment a deeper connection between Tanzania and other countries by engaging and leveraging volunteers, partner organizations and local communities. Our mission is to facilitate a greater cross-cultural understanding and to foster a long lasting impact within societies by running cultural exchange programs that can benefit all the participants involved.

2. What we do

We offer authentic and immersive volunteer opportunities, which enable our participants to make a difference and to experience a world outside of the ordinary, without feeling like tourists. Volunteers are able to engage deeply with Tanzania by working and collaborating with local communities and by living with local host families.

With the aim of creating an experience that best fits the participants' objectives and needs, we run three different types of programs:

Volunteer program: we recruit volunteers to work in one of our partner projects, which range from schools to hospitals, community centres or orphanages.
Internship program: we give the opportunity to skilled volunteers to practice the expertise they have acquired at their university or workplace and to share their knowledge with the local community.
Volunteer & travel program: we partner with travel companies to add a travel experience to the volunteer or internship program and to allow volunteers to discover the natural beauty that Tanzania offers.

We provide full support throughout the entire volunteer experience, as we want to make sure to give our participants the adventure of a lifetime.

3. What are our core values

We embrace a core set of organisational values, which are at the centre of our work and are shared with all our partners:

Young people must be at the forefront of change and have an active role in the development of their communities;
Meaningful partnerships with other organizations who share our same values are fundamental in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);
Communities need to be at the centre of their own empowerment;
Sustainable positive change can only be achieved through a holistic approach that engages all aspects of the culture;
Cultural exchange needs to be fostered in under-served areas in order to promote continuous interchange of information;
Working in partnership with existing institutions – in particular with relevant government departments – is pivotal in delivering tangible changes;
Only intensive long-term interventions can achieve durable changes.

4. What makes us unique

We are specialist in placing volunteers at different work projects depending on their interests and goals and we know our country better than any other international organization.
Here is what makes United Planet Tanzania unique:

We are volunteer experts: Our team has extensive experience in welcoming volunteers from all over the world, placing them at their chosen projects in Tanzania and finding them friendly local host families. All of us at United Planet Tanzania have volunteered in the past, so we understand the challenges that our participants face.
We offer the most authentic and immersive experience for people who want to make a real difference: by living with an African family and by working alongside local community members, volunteers have the opportunity to experience the country as locals and to fully immerse themselves in the Tanzanian culture.
We offer full support throughout the entire volunteer journey: we provide personal assistance prior to the volunteers' arrivals and 24/7 support once they are in the country. As soon as they arrive, volunteers get two days orientation that help them to familiarize themselves with the basic rules and habits of the country.
We are structured to minimise costs for volunteers: as a non-profit organization, we aim to keep costs down for our participants in order to make it easier for people to join our programs.
We personalise our programs depending on the volunteers' interests: we work with each participant to understand what their objectives are and which skills they want to develop and we ultimately create a personalised experience unique to their needs.
What we do has a meaningful long-term impact: by joining one of our programs, volunteers can make a real difference in the community they serve and learn new useful skills. We have long-term partnership with our volunteer projects as we aim to achieve a long-lasting change.
We collaborate with national and international partners: we believe in the importance of creating meaningful partnerships with national and international organizations in order to make the process of coming to volunteer in Tanzania easier.

5. What are our plans for the future

United Planet Tanzania is a small and locally run organization, whose aim is to continue to expand and to become an important point of contact between Tanzania and the rest of the world. Our main goal is to give the opportunity to an increased number of volunteers to experience what Tanzania has to offer, to learn new skills and to make a significant impact in their own lives and in the lives of those who they will meet during their adventure.

Our long-term objectives are:

Incorporating local Tanzanian volunteers into our programs. This will allow for a greater cultural exchange and will give the opportunity to local students to gain some work experience;
Continuing to extend the list of our partner projects;
Building strong relationships with new international volunteer organizations;
Creating specific programs for families or group of volunteers;
Starting a United Planet Tanzania project in collaboration with the Tanzanian government;
Getting more people to financially support United Planet Tanzania.
