VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

1. WHY VOLUNTEER WITH UNITED PLANET TANZANIA?

By becoming a volunteer with United Planet Tanzania, you will be able to make a positive and significant difference and you will have an experience out of the ordinary. You will be exposed to a completely different culture from your own, which will change your world's perspective.

By living with an African family and by working alongside local community members, you will have the chance to experience the country as a local and not as a tourist and to discover new ways of living, working and thinking.

The opportunities for picking up new skills and information, which will be extremly helpful in your future, are almost limitless so make the most of your chance to learn and experience what you wish. Be sure to confront yourself with new and formative situations, often quite different from what you might have envisioned before arriving to Tanzania.

2. WHAT ARE OUR VOLUNTEER PROJECTS?

We partner with projects that work within three main areas:

Education projects: volunteers will work at schools or educational centres. Subject matters will vary according to placement.
Healthcare projects: volunteers will work at centres for people in need of specialized care. Examples include a children’s cancer ward, a home for the disabled and a centre for mentally handicapped youths.
Community projects: volunteers will work in community centres where the aim is to promote a long term positive behavioural change among the people of the community.

In many of the projects, coordinators always welcome a new perspective and are happy to adjust tasks to volunteers' skills and needs. This is why we love to hear your ideas at any time so we can help to create the best possible experience for you.

All of our partner projects are completely independent non-profit organizations, which share similar goals and objectives to the ones we have at United Planet Tanzania.

We exclusively select placements that have a strong history of being reputable and that have demonstrated to be able to make a positive and significant impact on the community.
We have partnered with several of them for many years and are confident in the goal of their work. We mainly deal with projects that are accustomed to involve international volunteers in their daily routine in order to maximise the volunteers’ experience.
We meet regularly with each partnering project to make sure their quality remains high and their plans have not changed.

Before each volunteer’s arrival, we schedule a meeting with the project coordinator to discuss what the volunteer’s purpose and aspirations are.

We are constantly collaborating with our local community to broaden the number and geography of our partnering projects.

Get more information on our ways of working.

3. WHO CAN ENROL?

The volunteer program is available to people of any nationality or skill level, however we do have a few requirements which you will have to meet in order to take part in one of our projects:

Being at least 18 years of age at the time of arrival;

Being flexible and able to live and work in a completely different culture;
Being proactive and independent;
Being patient and creative.

Whether you are in a group, or you want to come by yourself, we can find the perfect project for you.

4. HOW LONG IS OUR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM?

Our program runs from a minimum of 2 weeks to a maximum of 1 year. The most common length of volunteering is 3 months, as this amount of time will allow you to get comfortable with your new life and have and a deeper understanding of what it means to live in Tanzania.

We have experienced that long-term trips can be more challenging but at the same time can make a significant and long-lasting change in your life. If they wish, long-term volunteers can choose to work at multiple placements during their stay.

5. WHAT WILL BE YOUR ACCOMMODATION?

In order to effeticvely experience the local life in Tanzania, you will be placed in a local African family near the project of your choice. You will be considered as part of the family, and as such you will have to follow the rules that the family sets. These rules are also put in place to ensure your maximum safety during your stay.
As part of the fee that you will pay prior to your arrival, the family will provide you shelter and meals.

Although we do not recommend it, there is also the option of staying in a volunteer house.

What happens once you arrive:
After being picked up at the airport by our country coordinator, you will spend your first two nights at a hotel in Dar Es Salaam, so you can rest after the long journey and adjust to the new environment;
The next step is for you receive two days of orientation, where you will be given basic knowledge of Swahili, and of the country habits and rules;
Finally, you will be ready to start your adventure! If you are volunteering in Dar Es Salaam, the country coordinator will bring you to your host family and will show you your project. If instead you have chosen a placement outside of Dar es Salaam, the country coordinator will bring you to the bus station and you will then be picked up by a member of your project at your destination.
