1. WHAT IS THE PROJECT ABOUT?

Chakuama is an orphanage that hosts children who lost their parents or were abandoned in the streets. It provides them with shelter, clothes, health and education at government schools.

The orphanage is home to 60 children from the age of 2 to 18, but its objective is to expand and be able to host more kids. The orphanage runs a nursery school as well.

The project started in 1998 with 5 children and has continued to grow over the years.
Its mission is to make sure disadvantaged children can live a better life. The staff is composed by 12 people who receive an allowance.

Chakuama has a few sources of funding, including companies such as Vodacom and private donors, however the amount of funds they receive is limited.

2. WHAT WILL YOUR ROLE AND TASKS BE?

Volunteers are welcome to support the orphanage in all areas, depending on their interests and skills, including:

Childcare;
Teaching at the nursery;
Helping to cook lunch;
Playing with the kids;
Supporting the management with accounts and project development.

Daily tasks are flexible. A typical day at Chakuama begins at 10 a.m, when nursery school starts. In the afternoon volunteers can either play with the orphans or support them with their homework. Although classes run between 10 a.m and 1:30 p.m, volunteers usually arrive at 8 a.m to help getting the kids ready for school, and can stay longer if they want to play with the children.

3. WHICH SKILLS ARE REQUIRED?

This project is suitable especially to unskilled volunteers who:

Are at least 18 years of age at the time of arrival;
Have a good knowledge of spoken and written English;
Enjoy spending time with children.

4. WHY SHOULD YOU CHOOSE THIS PROJECT?

By working at Chakuama, volunteers can have a real impact into the children lives and can help them to build a better future.

The main challenges to expect are that the children come from different backgrounds and lived through tough experiences, so this placement is ideal for volunteers who are adaptable and are willing to learn how to deal with these difficulties.

At the project, volunteers can also learn to cook typical Tanzanian food and understand more about the African culture.
